Working Group on Data and Research

The GMG Working Group (WG) on data and research, co-chaired by UNDESA and IOM and established in 2011, seeks to strengthen the evidence base for informed policymaking, programme implementation and evaluation in the field of international migration and development. In particular, the WG encourages the collection, use, dissemination and analysis of accurate, timely and relevant migration data and promotes policy-relevant research on international migration and development.

The WG seeks to enhance coherence within the GMG in the area of data and research and represents the GMG in its interaction with the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) on issues related to data and research, in particular through the GFMD Ad-hoc Working Group on policy coherence, data and research. The WG also has close synergies with the Thematic Working Group on Data on Migration and Remittance Flows of the World Bank’s Global Knowledge Partnership on Migration and Development (KNOMAD).

On 18 December 2017 and the occasion of International Migrants Day, the GMG Handbook for Improving the Production and Use of Migration Data for Development was launched.
